With back-to-school just about here, things are about to get more hectic around my house. Added into the already existing craziness will be a car ride to and from Kindergarten, with preschool drop off for my twins sandwiched in there. It’s a lot to keep up with –  I’m exhausted just thinking about it.  So, there’s no better time to talk about the importance of moms finding moments for themselves this back to school season. As moms, we work so hard to prepare everyone else, so it’s only fitting that we take some time to ourselves.

For me, if you give me 5 minutes, I’ll inevitably find another chore that needs to be done, laundry that needs to folded or toys that need to be picked up.  There will always be another chore or task that you could be doing, but the benefit of a little downtime will help you get through long days..

5 Ways to Take 5

1. Have a Spot & Try Doing Nothing

Call it a Mom Cave (if you’re truly lucky to have this designated room) or just a spot where you might find some solitary time. For me, I have a chair and table set up in one corner of my master bedroom.

A cozy blanket, table and candle – it’s a pretty good spot to just ‘take five.’  Have a spot in mind so that you can take advantage of  any breaks in those ever-present duties of being a mom.

2. Read or Listen to Music

I like to indulge in a good book and escape a little bit. I do miss the days of reading for hours on a rainy day in a cozy chair. These days, I’m happy to get through a few pages.

You can also try music, your favorite magazines or reading a favorite blog. But no work or checking emails!

3. The Perfect Mom Snack

4.  Take Slow Sips 

Sometimes a break is best spent sipping slowly – whether it’s tea, coffee or my favorite, a fruit infused water to help you refresh and de-stress. I love adding mint leaves to my water with whatever fresh fruit I have on hand.

5. Journal or Make a List

As moms, we have a lot to think about. We’re keeping track of everyone else’s schedules and to-do lists, in addition to our own. Taking some time to journal or make a list can be helpful.

You don’t have to equate making a list with work. For me, I find that making a list helps clear my head, helps me breathe a bit, knowing I’ll get it all done…eventually.

Whatever you do to enjoy some ‘mom-time’ this back to school season, enjoy it while it lasts. We all know they eventually find us.
